Nankōbō is the only temple on the pilgrimage to enshrine Daitsū Chishō Nyorai, a Buddha of the distant past, and the only one whose name ends in “-bō” (a priest’s lodging). It grew up as the temple attached to the Bekku branch of Ōyamazumi Shrine, the great Iyo shrine of the sea god, originally on the island of Ōmishima.

Burned in the wars of the 16th century, it was rebuilt here at the Bekku, in the centre of Imabari.

ABOUT STORY55th temple Nankōbō(南光坊)

The fifty-fifth temple is Nankōbō (南光坊), the only temple on the route to enshrine Daitsū Chishō Nyorai, a Buddha of the distant past.

It stands about 3.0 km from the fifty-sixth temple, in the heart of Imabari.

You are at once overwhelmed by the huge, magnificent gate at the entrance to Nankōbō. Four Heavenly Kings stand guard, inside and out, watching for anything untoward.

For a city-centre temple, the gate makes a genuinely commanding impression.

This is the main hall, where Daitsū Chishō Nyorai is enshrined — a rare Buddha found nowhere else on the pilgrimage.

The temple grew up beside the great Iyo shrine of the sea god, and that long history hangs about the hall.

The Daishi-dō, too, is large and magnificent. Before it I prayed for the safety of my friends, my family and all those close to me, and for peace in the world.

The scale of the halls gives even a quiet prayer here a certain grandeur.

This is the goshuin of the fifty-fifth temple, Nankōbō. The characters look brushed with a thick, bold pen rather than in formal calligraphy.

Fifty-four temples still remained on my journey, the temples of Imabari close together.

The distance to the next temple was about 3.4 km, a short walk across the city.
