Eifuku-ji, on the hill of Mt. Futō, enshrines Amida Nyorai, an image long revered together with Hachiman Daibosatsu. Kōbō Daishi is said to have founded it in the Kōnin era at the request of Emperor Saga, and it was for centuries joined with the neighbouring Katsuoka Hachimangū, known as the “Iwashimizu Hachiman of Iyo.”

Temple and shrine were separated in the Meiji era, when the temple moved to its present spot partway up the hill.

ABOUT STORY57th temple Eifuku-ji(栄福寺)

The fifty-seventh temple is Eifuku-ji (栄福寺), on the hill of Mt. Futō, enshrining Amida Nyorai.

It lies about 2.4 km from the fifty-eighth temple, in the hills of Imabari.

There is no gate at the entrance to Eifuku-ji; instead, the trees lining the approach road form the way into the temple.

The green tunnel of branches makes a gentle, natural threshold.

This is the main hall, where Amida Nyorai is enshrined — an image long honoured together with Hachiman Daibosatsu.

For centuries the temple was joined with the neighbouring Hachiman shrine, the “Iwashimizu Hachiman of Iyo.”

Next is the Daishi-dō. Here I prayed for the safety of my family and for peace in the world while chanting the Heart Sutra.

The hilltop quiet lent the prayer a settled calm.

This is the goshuin of the fifty-seventh temple, Eifuku-ji, brushed on its wooded hill.

Fifty-six temples still remained on my journey, the days passing gently now.

The distance to the next temple was about 3.1 km, an easy walk on toward the next peak.
